Insurance Terms, Explained Simply

The jargon that makes health insurance confusing — decoded in plain English.

Health insurance terms explained

Health insurance has its own vocabulary, and a few key terms decide what you actually pay. Once these click, comparing plans gets much easier.

Premium

The fixed amount you pay every month to keep coverage active — whether or not you use it. Like a subscription.

Deductible

What you pay out of pocket for covered care before your plan starts paying its share.

Copay

A flat fee for a specific service — e.g. $30 for a doctor's visit or $15 for a prescription.

Coinsurance

Your share of a cost as a percentage — e.g. you pay 20%, the plan pays 80% (after the deductible).

Out-of-pocket maximum — your safety net

This is the most important number. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you'll pay in a year for covered care. Once your deductible, copays, and coinsurance reach that limit, your plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.

How they work together: You pay your premium every month no matter what. When you get care, you pay toward your deductible, then copays/coinsurance — until you hit your out-of-pocket maximum, after which the plan covers everything else that year.
